Apple Pie Baked Beans

Sweet, delicious baked bean recipe that's perfect for summertime BBQs.

Ingredients

  • 2-28oz cans Bush's Baked Beans
  • 1-14oz can Apple Pie Filling
  • 1lb breakfast sausage 
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 1/2 red bell pepper chopped
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 16oz BBQ sauce (use the cheap stuff)
  • 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon W Sauce or Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Killer Hogs Hot BBQ Rub

Directions

  1. Prepare smoker for indirect cooking at 250-275°F
  2. Open and drain the cans of baked beans. Brown the sausage with the onions and bell pepper.
  3. Pour the beans into a large dutch oven cast iron pot.  Add the sausage mixture along with the can of apple pie filling.  Stir gently to combine.
  4. Add the bbq sauce, brown sugar mustard, W sauce, and hot rub and gently stir again to incorporate. 
  5. Place the dutch oven on the pit and smoke for 2 hours stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve warm with your favorite smoked meats.

I’ve made these beans a few times. Very easy to make. Please look at his Smoked Mac & Cheese. That recipe is the bomb, everyone loves it. I also did his Pork Belly burnt ends last year. Making them again for the fourth of July this year. Wondering if he has a recipe for barbecue sauce.

Delicious recipe! I needed my whole big green egg for the meat. I cooked the beans in a crock pot, and added some liquid smoke to sub for the smoker.

A friend brought these to Thanksgiving. OMG these are great. I would chop the apples a lot smaller, but still the way it cooked they aren’t a problem. Some folks if they see something that looks ‘off’ they tend to put it to the side. Chopping them up more, and adding a little more onion would be fantastic!

Fantastic recipe — a crowd favorite! I usually have to cook mine in the crock pot because my Pellet Grill is always full-up with pork butts (Killer Hog-style when I make this recipe. To compensate, I make sure to use a BBQ sauce with a hickory smoke flavoring. Like others have posted, I chop up the apple pie filling slices into smaller chunks to more evenly distribute. A few times I have had some fresh apples on hand I have done a tiny dice on them peeling and all and tossed them in the crock pot raw or lightly sautéed near the end of the onion/bell peppers. Sometimes I will also add applewood smoked bacon in addition to the sausage if I have it on hand. I cut it into squares chunks and soft-fry it in a skillet before adding the bacon pieces to the top of the mixture to further cook down. The recipe is wonderful as is – I just like to experiment.
